How to Escape the Echo Chamber

Using artificial intelligence (AI) to process and screen marketing data creates risks of extremism and bias.

Understanding the mechanics of AI can help us escape thought traps. AI requires 3 components to process: a sample dataset, an instruction, and an actual dataset. AI can select dramatic data that we will click and read. The system works fast by searching our web history and grouping similar words in the actual data. The result is the news feed we see every day on our phones.

AI understands and predicts our behavior from our digital footprint. The more interest we show in a topic, the more such content will come back to us. To avoid the trap of extreme thinking, we must diversify our digital footprint. We can do this by “liking” all issues, following pages with ideas that differ from ours, unsubscribing from social media accounts of people who think like us, following news from mainstream media with different perspectives.

Implications for the future:

-Changes of today's digital society will bring bias, extremism, and discrimination when people consume data from AI algorithms that aren’t neutral.

-If people lack good analytical skills and consume media on online platforms, they may be dominated by AI algorithms and eventually lose the power to make decisions for themselves.

- Transparency of technology leaders including those involved in supervising AI systems should be under special government supervision, including the laws and regulations to protect fundamental aspects of privacy and security.
